Each week, for our #EOTherapy Twitter chat, we discuss an essential oil or specific condition. This is a summary of the discussion we had about the benefits of black pepper essential oil. There were a number of contributors, beside myself. Thank you to everyone who joined us.

General Information
Black pepper (Piper nigrum) essential oil is steam distilled from the grown berries, which grow on a vine.
The most common therapeutic properties are: antiseptic, analgesic, digestive, diuretic, febrifuge and tonic.
Some of the key words that come to mind for black pepper are invigorating, strengthening, action, warming, and supportive.
Black and white pepper come from the same plant. Black pepper is with skin on the berries and white is without.
Black pepper has been used in India for over 4,000 years for urinary and liver disorders.
The oil is mostly made up of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes – limonene, pinene.

Applications and uses
Common uses of black pepper are for muscular aches and pains, menstrual cramping, colds and ‘flu, digestive issues, circulation and a nerve tonic. It is a great oil for sports therapies, both pre and post sports activities. An after workout muscle rub comes to mind, when we think of black pepper. I personally use it in a muscle rub, but found that the scent isn’t as unpleasant when mixed with other essential oils (EOs). The best application for rheumatoid arthritis, bruises, muscular pain and circulation is a topical application in an oil or cream.

If you are ‘not crazy on the scent’, one aromatherapist suggested that the essential oils of ginger, clary sage, or any of the spicy oils, could be added. She stated she loved the spices combined, even if it is just in an oil burner, with some sweet orange added. There was further discussion on which essential oils to add to black pepper. I noted that I’ve never added orange to black pepper. Usually ginger, marjoram, rosemary, and grapefruit, in a muscle rub. It was suggested to add some clove and cinnamon, and lemon and ginger by another aromatherapist. One had never tried ginger CO2. ‘I’m sure it’s quite different. I’ve only blended it therapeutically with rosemary and marjoram. Will try more.’

One question, which arose was, ‘So when using black pepper EO for digestion, do you consume it?’. You do not consume the oil, but it can be used in a massage oil or salve over the abdomen area. The spice can be consumed internally. One aromatherapist recommended topical applications and depending on what you are treating, would then determine the percentage of oil to use. She noted to combine with citrus, as they are excellent on the digestive system. Bergamot would be a good addition to black pepper. Another agreed and said they used mandarin a lot.

Another question, was regarding the use of the oil for colds and flu and whether it would be applied to your chest. Once diluted, the oil can be applied to the chest, back and soles of the feet. For colds and ‘flu, fever and the chills, the oil can be massaged in a carrier or used in a vaporizer or diffuser.

It is strengthening to the mind it can be used for studying, confusion, and memory. Combine black pepper, rose, and peppermint for studying.

The conversation then diverted a little, when mandarin was mentioned. I noted that I tended to use mandarin more for its calming properties, than digestion. I use mandarin, lavender and chamomile in a calming blend. One therapist’s daughter has TOF, so she used mandarin and German chamomile a lot when she was younger. She used lavender as well, as she has chronic lung disease too and they were perfect for her.

One questions asked, was whether anyone had tried laponite gel as a base. One therapist uses it because it doesn’t leave any residue and absorbs quickly. It looks like their newsletter has some useful information.

When asked which other essential oils have worked well with black pepper, the following were mentioned: rosemary, cajeput, and cardamom for digestion, marjoram, peppermint and lemongrass.

Research
One interesting study stated that inhalation of vapour from black pepper extract reduces smoking withdrawal symptoms.¹ One aromatherapist thought that you would have to be careful with inhalations, as it may irritate the mucous membranes. I noted that my husband found that inhalation in an imitation cigarette, helped to curb his cravings. He did not use nasal inhalation.

Two studies completed in Japan showed that black pepper could help with stability in seniors by inhalation.²  The oils would have to be at a very low dilution for the elderly, so many times a diffuser is best.

Black pepper is also good for loss of appetite. In a study with elderly post stroke patients with dysphagia, nasal inhalation aided in the reflex to swallow.³ Black pepper is a strong appetite stimulant and was reported to facilitate swallowing in older people.⁴

After our chat, I looked further into research completed on black pepper essential oil and found that it is also helpful for hypertension^5&6, bronchial asthma⁷, and is a strong antioxidant^8&9 and exhibits anti-inflammatory¹⁰ and anticancer activities^10&11.

Men are increasingly becoming aware of the benefits of using natural treatments and products for common conditions and to take care of their skin. Men are realizing that a bar of soap, which dries their skin, and drugstore brand gels and lotions are not ideal for their daily skincare routine. Many others are reacting to the numerous chemicals found in most skin care products, or want to stop using a product from the women in their life. The pre shave treatment has a number of benefits, such as softening the hair follicles and reducing the number of nicks and cuts. The shaving oil lubricates the skin and protects it from the abrasive scraping of the razor blades as they pass over the skin. Shaving oil will provide a closer shave, with less irritation, not clog pores and contain only natural ingredients and no toxic chemicals.

In many cases of folliculitis, the follicles are infected with bacteria or fungus. Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) is most common on the face, but can also affect other parts of the body, which are shaved or plucked. As hair begins to grow back after shaving, curly hair grows into the skin, instead of straight out. It affects men with coarse or tight curling thick hair.

There are a number of essential oils, which help with alopecia (hair loss) by stimulating the hair follicles. Folliculitis (infection of the hair follicle) and pseudofolliculitis (shaving bumps) are helped by antibacterial essential oils and vegetable based carrier oils, which are moisturizing and non-irritating. Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) is a fungal infection and is helped by the antifungal properties in a number of essential oils. Studies have shown essential oils to have antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties for prostate cancer and others aid in the enlargement of the prostate. For these types of treatment, a personal consultation is required.

The term aromatherapy is misleading, as it implies that healing occurs by scent alone. This is only a small part of what aromatherapy includes. The word ‘aromatherapy’ has become a buzz word and has been used for any product which contains natural or synthetic essential oils, even in minute amounts. Aromatherapy, simply described, is the use of essential oils to aid in the healing of the body, mind and spirit. I now prefer to call it essential oil therapy.

However, medical, or clinical, aromatherapy uses pure, therapeutic grade essential oils, which are derived from plant material such as herbs, flowers, roots, trees and fruits. Essential oils are concentrated, volatile substances, which display various properties. These plant properties include, but are not limited to, anti-viral agents, anti-inflammatories, decongestants or sedatives.

Clinical aromatherapy treats an individual on a physiological, topical and psychological level. Aromatherapy is holistic; in that the whole person is treated and not just the symptom of a disease. The aim is not a quick fix or cure, but true healing and a strengthened immune system. As essential oils are in two forms; liquid and vapour, it is difficult to treat on one level.

Essential oils are used as a preventative of disease/ailments and as a treatment for diseases when they arise. It has been stated that the overuse of antibiotics have led to immune deficiency disorders, underdeveloped immune systems and resistant bacteria (Schmidt, Smith, Sehnert. Beyond Antibiotics). Essential oils have shown to be effective against bacteria, viruses and fungi. In the case of the common cold, the use of immune stimulating essential oils can prevent the cold, alleviate the symptoms, shorten the duration and protect against secondary infections.

There has been an increase in the number of studies being completed on the effectiveness of essential oils. These studies include the antiseptic, fungicide and bactericide effects of tea tree oil against oral bacteria (PMID: 14567294), the induction of apoptosis by citrus essential oils in human leukemic (HL-60) cells (PMID: 14758720) and the antifungal activity of thyme essential oil (PMID: 14750199).

Most of what we see in the media, regarding aromatherapy, centres on scent alone. It’s no wonder that there is a misunderstanding of what aromatherapy really is. Please review our other articles to learn more about clinical aromatherapy and its benefits. You’ll find that it’s a lot more than just scent alone.
